Cataclysm sets record sales of 4.7 million copies in first month

In just the first month the latest expansion Cataclysm has sold 4.7 million units. This makes it the one month highest selling PC game ever, this is based off of company data and data from retailers. There are many factors that have helped Cataclysm hit this mark, that being a worldwide release and more importantly the ever growing digital download market.

Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard released the first expansion of the game “The Burning Crusade” on January 16, 2007 and the second expansion “Wrath of the Lich King” was released on November 13, 2008. It is presently the most subscribed MMORPG game in the world with more than 12 million subscribers in the world as of today and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment in a statement said that “We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for 'World of Warcraft: Cataclysm,' making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet.”

One of the biggest gimmicks behind this new expansion is the destruction of world of Azeroth by the evil dragon Deathwing the Destroyer. The Deathwing who was last seen in Warcraft II has been spending his time healing himself. The destruction causes a sweeping cataclysm which reshapes much of the world’s surface.

Other major environmental changes include the redesign of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor areas introduces during the launch of World of Warcraft in 2004. And the new area like Mount Hyjal and Deepholm opens up whereas the Worgen and the Goblins will emerge as new playable races. And keeping the new cataclysm theme in mind, new race class combinations are introduced and players will be able to fly their mounts in the old world of Azeroth.
