AoC: Age of Conan Gold

Edited by: Alexandra Jul 18,2010

I've recently started playing Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. I have to say, the game is quite fun, you can see aspects of MMORPG evolution in every facet of the game.

The best thing about the game by far, is the combat system, the graphics are awesome, don't get me wrong, but the combat system holds so much potential. At first glance it is a lot more complicated than most other MMORPG's but after watching the Tutorial Video it didn't take long to get a feel for the system. In the first few levels I had mastered the basics, allowing me to make a melee strike on an opponent who was blocking. This exited me a lot! The system is rather well developed and I can't wait to see what it holds at later levels in PvP combat! I have yet to attempt a “caster” or “ranged” character, but I intend to do so soon. I have done some reading on the caster classes in the game, and it seems that unless you get up close and personal, there will be no way to really use the “directional attack” method, other than pointing a cone attack at some enemies, but not others.  The “ranged” (not caster) class, Ranger, appears to have recently undergone a huge revamp. I also have not tried this class, but intend to, and VERY soon. What intrigues me most about this class, is the ability I've read about, to zoom into first player mode and aim at your target. Yes you heard me right.  Crazy huh? I can't wait!

The worst thing about the game, in my opinion, is the currency system. The standard currency in game is basically gold.  You have Tin, Copper, Silver, Gold, with Tin being the lowest, and Gold being highest naturally. They are denominated in 100's, so 100 Tin = 1 Copper, 100 Copper = 1 Silver, 100 Silver = 1 Gold. As with most MMORPG's the currency is adequate for purchasing things in the starting area, an area in which you level from 1 to 20. I soon found from speaking to other people in the game, that a mount at level 40 costs 3 Gold. I thought to myself that this would be no problem if the game held true to other MMORPG's I've played.  I was quite wrong.  As you level up in other games, it is quite easy to see the increase in the amount of money you get from higher and higher level quests. In Age of Conan, Gold just does not seem to be there.  After 10 levels, I've found that I still only managed to net about 40 copper. I loot everything, sell whatever I cannot use, and do every quest I come across, but the Age of Conan Gold just does not seem to build up. This is a major drawback, but I have yet to experience anything outside the starting area, so it could be that once you gain level 20, you'll easily be able to start building up coinage. Good luck in your own Hyborian Adventures!
