The role of currency in Age of Conan

Age of Conan was released during the peak of online MMORPGs. It had to be one of the highest rated online games released at that time. Funcom boasted of an extravagant visual experience and an extreme player versus player environment and I’m proud to say they have delivered it to the best of they’re abilities. Age of Conan has one of the most scenic environments ever made for an MMORPG. During gameplay you will probably find yourself just randomly roaming around in awe of the details. Age of Conan or AoC as it is referred to by its online community consists of three races the Aquilonians, the Cimmmerians and the Stygians. Each race comes from a separate region and having a dedicated city acting as a safe haven. The economy is simple and similar to most MMORPGs. The currency basically consists of gold, silver and copper. 100 units of each equals to one unit of the higher currency.

Initial exposure to the currency is done via questing, loot drops and buying via NPCs ( non player characters).  Players may also sell and buy items from other players through the tradeposts system. The tradeposts are neutral zones for players to exchange goods and gold safely without interruption. Despite the game being heavily based on player versus player combat Funcom has managed to integrate siege battles into its scenarios. Guilds may collectively build keeps in set locations allowing them to make solid defence in the PvP maps. Guilds may also stock the keep with items and crafted goods by its members. Players planning on going down this path would require immense amounts of resources and gold. AoC gold becomes easier to earn as you progress in levels. Quests rewards grow exponentially as you traverse through Hyboria.

At the final legs of the game the player’s stature depends on how well he can manage his gold and his combat skills. The economy system and its combat mechanicsgive Age of Conan a more realistic feel than the other games out on the market.
